Applications

The Dropterra water desalination and purification systems can provide fresh and clean drinkable and functional water for numerous situations including but not limited to:

Hospitality

Island Resorts / Holiday Resorts / Hotels
Example

Cleaning and softening of current water supply (municipal or bore) reduces scaling of Hotel water infrastructure such as kitchens, washing machines, pipes, taps, bathrooms resulting in greatly reduced maintenance and replacement costs for infrastructure and a more effective and pleasant work and living experience for staff and guests.

Use Case

Korean Islands Jeollanamdo Province: Installation of Solar Powered Desalination system to replace water supply shipped from the mainland. Provided an independent, environmentally friendly solution that greatly reduced the cost of water to the island businesses and inhabitants.

explore applications

Desalination / cleaning seawater and brackish / hard water, softening current water supply, bore or seawater supply to replace shipping or piping water to remote and offshore locations.

explore BENEFITS

Independent water source, reduced cost of water, reduced maintenance and improved performance of water use equipment (washing machines, pipes, showers, baths, kitchens etc), drinkable water for guests, value add marketing opportunity for resort.

Data centers

Cloud Hosting/Ecommerce Applications/Online Gaming/Data Storage and Processing
Example

Data centers consume billions of litres of water per year to cool their equipment. New data centers are often built close to large population hubs to help its web services respond quickly. In hot, dry areas this puts additional pressure on a communities already limited water supply.

A Dropterra system utilizing water sourced from a bore or the sea reduces the cost of water to the data center by up to 85% and unburdens the local community water supply.

explore applications

Water supply for cooling and infrastructure use.

Desalination/cleaning, Softening. Bore or Seawater Supply

explore BENEFITS

Reduced cost of water, improved water quality reduces maintenance, lower risk of data centre failure due to water supply failure, independent water supply, comply with regulatory requirements, remove pressure from the local municipal supply.

communities

Refugee Camps/Drought Stricken Regions/Developing Nations
Use Case #1

In Senegal a community had limited access to drinkable water and electricity. A Solar Powered Desalination system was installed providing 20,000 litres of water per day, eliminating the need for expensive and unreliable electricity. More than 600 villagers now benefit from a low cost, reliable source of drinkable water.

Use Case #2

Sumba Foundation in Indonesia spend USD$4 million dollars per year providing water to the 30,000 people living in Sumba. This is achieved through a combination of wells, handpumps, water stations, diesel powered pumps, generators and water storage tanks.

This is a wonderful initiative enabling Sumba’s people access to water but it is inefficient and expensive. Diesel fuel is expensive, environmentally unfriendly and sometimes in short supply. This can affect the consistent supply of water.

Dropterra’s Solar Powered Desalination systems can greatly reduce the cost of supplying the water, ensure consistent renewable supply and have zero negative impact on the local environment.

explore applications

Desalination / cleaning, bore or seawater, clean existing water supply.

explore BENEFITS

Increased availability of affordable water, environmentally responsible, Human rights focused, reduced cost of water, improved quality of life, improved industry productivity.

agriculture

Vegetable Farms/Fruit Orchards/Vineyards/ Flower Growers
Use Case #1

Vegetable farmers in drought stricken New South Wales, Australia, installed a Solar Powered Desalination system sourcing water from subterranean bores. Seasonal harvests were guaranteed and the quality of the produce was improved with cleaner water. Water costs and power costs were greatly reduced improving the overall cashflow and profitability of the vegetable farms.

Use Case #2

Avocado production is highly water-intensive, roughly 70 liters per fruit, more than 12 times as much as it takes to grow a tomato. And avocado consumption is increasing by up to 50% per year in many countries.

Avocados are mostly grown in dry regions which places immense pressure on farmers in terms of cost of water for growing, which then increases the price consumers pay for avocados.

Dropterra has worked with Avocado growers introducing desalination systems enabling farms to access and use brackish and salty water. This has enabled cheaper and better crops of Avocados, ensuring that one of the world’s favorite fruits remain available and affordable.

explore applications

Desalination / cleaning, bore or seawater, clean existing water supply.

explore BENEFITS

Reliable and independent supply of water, reduced cost of water and power, improved quality of water.

Mining

Mineral processing - Gold, Diamond/Dust suppression- Coal, Iron Ore/Slurry Transport– Coal, Mine/ Mine Infrastructure requirements, Oil Drilling and Fracking
Example

Due to the nature of mine processing, water can become highly contaminated. The mining industry uses large amounts of water for mine processes including washing ore and mine tailings impoundment.

As such, mine process wastewater is often polluted with heavy metals and metalloids that necessitate expensive treatment before it is released into the environment or used for any other purpose.

Dropterra systems can recycle and reuse this water without allowing it to pollute the environment and eliminating the need for costly and wasted water shipped to the mine from other sources.

explore applications

Desalination / cleaning, bore or seawater supply, clean existing water supply, cleaning discharge water.

explore BENEFITS

Reduced cost of water, environmentally responsible / protects environment, Independent water supply, closed loop water recycling and reuse.

portable water making systems

Emergency/Military/Natural Disasters/Drought
explore applications

Desalination, cleaning and purifying any available source of water including storm and flood water

explore BENEFITS

Lightweight and easy to transport, convert most water sources to drinkable water, instant supply, lifesaving capability

Golf Courses

Golf Courses/Football and Sports Stadiums/Public Swimming Pools
Example

Golf courses can end their constant struggle to obtain adequate water from municipal sources and ensure their fairways and greens are consistently in premium condition. This will reduce management time and stress, water and course maintenance costs, resulting in attracting more members to the club and reinvesting earnings and savings in course facilities.

explore applications

Desalination / cleaning, bore or seawater, clean existing water supply.

explore BENEFITS

Reliable and independent supply of water, reduced costs, improved sporting facilities, environmentally friendly, key marketing and differentiation advantage.

Technology Capabilities

Can any type of water be used in your systems?

Any type of water can be used as an input for Dropterra’s systems. Dropterra will work with you to analyse the best available water source to suit your water requirements, budget and current water source options whether it be sea, river, lake, subterranean or municipal supply.

What are the key advantages of Dropterra’s systems?

- Scale: from very small to very large (modular approach)

- Solar, grid, and hybrid are all possible

- Energy and cost efficient

- Custom-made for each solution

How does the remote monitoring work?

Dropterra’s 24 hour monitoring centre allows for remote monitoring of input and output water and remote controlling of the machines.

Which power source is better: solar or municipal?

This depends on the technology and application but both can be economically sensible. It often depends on the availability and cost of electricity in your region.

How much water can your systems produce?

Anywhere from 500 liters per day to 5+ million liters per day.

Can several systems be connected together in order to satisfy any growth in demand within the same location?

Our systems can be scaled as required. If necessary, the system can be expanded and another system can be connected. The systems are designed and produced according to customer requirements. Of course, several systems can also be connected in series.

Are there waste products and if so, which ones and how will they be processed further?

A water drain occurs during our water treatment. This is clear, odorless and bacteria free water. It just has an increased salinity. The level of salinity depends on the input water and the system. In many cases the drain water can be used for other purposes.

What is the minimum size of the installation site for a system and what is the nature of the terrain?

The subsurface must be level and firm, ideally it is a concrete foundation. The size of the systems depends on their capacity. For our smallest systems with a capacity of 500 liters per hour, at least 6 m2 should be available (20 foot shipping container). Ideally the system should be placed in a shaded area.
